About the programme

Aalen University is the only university of applied sciences in all of Germany to offer an emphasis in surface technology in combination with materials technology. At present some 1500 engineers have been trained in this field, whose knowledge has made possible for them first-class positions, and will continue to do so in the future.

During your studies, you will be introduced to all aspects of surface and materials technology through application and practical learning.

In the first semesters, basis knowledge in a wide spectrum of subjects in the natural sciences is presented, complemented by introductory lectures in later emphases such as business studies.

In later semesters, you will become familiar with surface processes such as electroplating and painting techniques, thermo-chemical processes, and film technology, all of which reflect the full range of surface technology. Extensive courses in the area of corrosion are also offered. Materials, familiar and new, open up unexpected properties; we will introduce you to a wide variety of such materials.

Career opportunity

Your future career outlook are very good, as surface and materials technologies are key technologies and growing branches for today’s industry. Products dependent on plasma-supported surface technologies (including, for example, the field of thin film technology, with growth rates of 15 percent) alone have attained a world market volume of some 220 billion euros.

With the degree of Bachelor of Engineering, you will have terrific prospects for interesting and well-compensated employment in future-oriented branches. Your bachelor studies can also naturally be extended through a master’s programme.
