Aalen University together with Essingen University have responded to this demand. Both universities offer established and successful bachelor and Diplom study courses, Aalen with courses in surface and material technology and Esslingen with its chemical engineering/paint and environmental programmes.

The master programme is oriented on current developments within the industry. High tech products from Europe have found worldwide success. The proper development of a material and the design of a component require well-grounded knowledge in materials and surface technologies.

The course of studies connects the areas of "materials and their properties” and “boundaries and surface technologies.” Alongside of specialised technical knowledge, interdisciplinary working methods as project management, scientific thinking, and appreciation of complex relationships.
