The Departments of Medieval History and Modern History have both been judged as excellent in the QAA Teaching Quality Assessment, which took into account the training and supervision of postgraduate students.
The Department of Medieval History has one of the largest and most productive groups of medieval historians in the country. Its research interests cover European history, including Britain and Ireland, from the Dark Ages to the Reformation. The department has particular strengths in seeing history from the bottom up, in the Italian, Frankish and Anglo-Saxon early Middle Ages, in urban and rural settlements and in ecclesiastical, French, Italian and English history in the late Middle Ages.
The Department of Modern History is one of the largest in the country, with research interests covering most aspects of British and European history from the 16th century to the present. It draws upon many archival and library resources in the region, including the holdings of the University Library. These include a particularly rich collection of modern British political papers, including those of two former Prime Ministers, Neville Chamberlain and Lord Avon (formerly Sir Anthony Eden).
Research degrees are best planned by individual discussion. In line with the AHRC’s '1+3' model for research degrees, postgraduates are expected to register initially for an MPhil(B) degree. This combines a 20,000-word thesis on a specific research topic with taught courses. You may register for an MPhil research degree, which is examined by thesis alone. The thesis can be a maximum of 40,000 words.
