The Faculty of History is one of the world's leading history departments and has always been at the forefront of developments in the subject. They are continually pioneering new ideas, approaches and methods in response to the advance of scholarship and the needs of the national and international community. They provide teaching for over 350 graduate students from over 40 countries. This is the largest concentration of history graduate students in Britain and perhaps in Europe. The study of history equips their students with a broad range of skills in the collection, critical analysis and presentation of information.
We have specialists in the many branches of ancient history, medieval history, early modern history, the modern history of Great Britain and Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia.
While some of our most famous historians have focused on political and constitutional history, we have also played a central role in the development of the history of political thought and in the flourishing fields of economic, social and cultural history. Some members have expertise in business history, the history of population, the family and gender, and in religious and literary history.
