The History Department has introduced a new undergraduate curriculum reflecting the latest developments in historical research and practice. Structured around the research expertise of the department's staff, it offers both breadth and depth, giving you the opportunity to extend your knowledge and understanding, to pursue your own historical interests, while at the same time developing your capacity for critical thinking and effective communication.
Students take a range of courses each year. Some are core courses providing a grounding in historical methods and approaches; the majority are topic-based courses chosen from a wide range of options. In all years you may also opt to take an 'alternative subject' from another discipline in place of a History course. This may provide an opportunity to learn or keep up a foreign language.
In each case, students combine study of their chosen language and culture with History courses of their choice; in each case, the third year of this four-year degree is spent in a French, German or Spanish speaking country.
