General information

This Research Master’s programme in Modern History and International Relations trains you to do independent academic research in the fields of modern and contemporary history and international relations. It does so by intensively acquainting you with the most recent developments of modern history and international relations, with specific attention to the relevant theoretical and methodological backgrounds in the following fields:

  • History of Politics and Governance
  • Urban and Regional Social and Economic History
  • History of Cultural Identity
  • Security and Theory of International Relations
  • International Political Economy
  • European Cooperation and Integration
  • International Order and Global Governance

Career prospects

The programme prepares you for:

  • writing a successful PhD thesis in order to obtain, for example, a tenure position at a university
  • a position as an independent researcher in the public or private sector (academic or applied research)
  • other relevant positions with academic requirements.

Admission requirements

The prospective student should in any case meet the following admission requirements:

  • a Bachelor’s diploma in a field related to:
    • History
    • International Relations
    • American Studies
  • sufficient English skills to be able to follow the course successfully: a TOEFL score of 620/260/105, IELTS 7, or university-entrance level English (VWO level)
  • sufficient knowledge, insight and skills in disciplines relevant to the course
