About the programme

The combined talents and expertise of physicists and chemists are the key to success in the field of condensed matter and nanomaterials science, which is the focus of this programme. Functional materials, organic and inorganic, play an important role in much of modern physics, chemistry and technology.

Career Opportunities

The Master's programme in Chemistry and Physics is an excellent starting point for a career as a researcher in a multidisciplinary environment. More than half the graduates go on to do PhD research in the Netherlands or abroad. And because you can also carry out your work experience in industry, the programme offers you an excellent opportunity to explore possibilities for an industrial career. In addition to research work, you can consider jobs in development, management, patent law, etc.

Entrance Requirements

Applicants are expected to hold one of the following degrees:

  • a BSc degree with a major in Physics, Chemistry or Materials Science
  • a BSc in Science with strong component in Physics and/or Chemistry

All must have at least a second-class honours degree (or equivalent honours/GPA).

Proof of profiency in English

All other applicants, including applicants who hold a Dutch HBO diploma (diploma of higher professional education), must provide proof of proficiency in English. To do so, you are required to take one of the following English language tests:

  • IELTS, Academic Module. Minimum score: 6.5 overall band, at least 6 for writing. IELTS is the test preferred by Utrecht University.
  • TOEFL, Internet based. Minimum score: 93. Institutional scores are not accepted. The TOEFL institution code for Utrecht University is 9062.
  • Cambridge Certificates
    Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English at least a B grade.
    Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English at least a C grade.
